For almost 30 years St. Pius X Church hosted homeless individuals and families in the Fr. Nelson Hall for a week each winter as part of Warm Nights, an inter-denominational mission opportunity. In an attempt to provide a safer environment for both the homeless and the participating churches, last year the Warm Nights program began providing food and shelterin a central location for almost 200 homeless adults and children.

Prepare bag lunches

Since refrigeration is limited at the hotel, they need 100 fresh lunches each day. Our SPX week to provide lunches is February 27 – March 5. If you’d like to volunteer to help provide bag lunches, please contact Sally Hein by phone (301 – 464 – 3752) or email (hein1@verizon.net) with the number of lunches you can provide (in multiples of 10 – 10, 20, 30, etc) and your preferred drop-off date. You will be contacted by a Day Coordinator with a drop-off time and location here in Bowie. Please do not bring bag lunches to the church. Drop-offs will be each morning prior to 10 am. Instructions for bag lunch content / preparation are attached.

Bag lunches should include:
- Sandwich (lunchmeat and cheese preferred( (some PB&J okay as well) Please take extra care to use good hygiene when preparing sandwiches.
- Beverage (water, Soda, Gatorade) - 1 or 2, 12 oz each per lunch
- Fruit - can be fresh (e.g. clementines, oranges, apples) or fruit cup – please include a spoon with a cup
- Bag of Chips (must be commercially packed)
- Cookies (or other sweet – must be commercially packed)
- Napkins
Bag Lunch Packaging
Please pack lunch – except the sandwich - in a plastic zip-lock bag (gallon). All sandwiches should be packed separately in a box, not with the other items in the zip-lock bag. Each sandwich should be labeled with sandwich type (Ham & cheese, Turkey & swiss, PB&J, etc.) Taping an index card to the sandwich works well.

Items needed by Warm Nights will be collected on the weekends of February 4/5, February 11/12 and February 18/19. Donated items will be collected in the Church Entranceway after all Masses.
In addition, to make helping even easier, you can also purchase off our Amazon Wish List which will allow you to purchase items on-line and have them sent directly to us for easy transport to the shelter.
If you choose to ship to the Wish List address, items need to arrive no later than Friday, February 24 to be included with the other donations. You may also choose to ship the items to your home and then bring them to the Church on February 4/5, February 11/12 and February 18/19.

volunteer to transport donations

Volunteers are needed to use their own car to deliver donated goods to the Shelter in Calverton, MD. Vans or pick-up trucks with enclosed beds are preferred.
- Sunday, February 19th at 12:30 pm – pick-up donations from Church Entranceway
- Friday, February 24th at 3:45 pm - Pick-up at SPX Regional School front entrance
- Week of February 26th (date TBD) – pick-up Amazon donations from a home in Bowie

Funds are needed to purchase vouchers / gift-cards to transportation partners (Metro, Uber, Lyft) for use in getting guests to school, work, medical appointments, job interviews, etc. Funds may also be used to purchase other needed items. $25 Giant Food gift cards and rolls of quarters for the laundromat would also be appreciated.
Donations can be made:- through Faith Direct by clicking HERE under Annual Collections
- mailed to the Rectory Office (3300 Moreland Place, Bowie MD 20715)
- placed in an envelope marked ‘Warm Nights’ in the offertory boxes
Donations should be made no later than Sunday, February 19th.
