In February, before the pandemic even started, Matthew Kelly tweeted
‘We are living in a culture of outrage. Someone is outraged about everything. And there is no room for forgiveness, grace, or even the benefit of the doubt in culture of outrage.’
And if that was true then, surely it’s true now. As the pandemic has stretched out over this year, incidents and systems of racial injustice continue to draw our attention, and we get closer to the election in November, there can be no doubt that ‘outrage’ is a word that aptly describes 2020.
And it is at these crossroads that we find ourselves as we enter into the fall here at SPX. So for our next series, we’ll be diving deep into how as people of faith, we’re called to see the world differently - and act accordingly. Our faith means that we’ll never be truly at home in this world, or any political party for that matter. No, the Gospel demands that we have room for forgiveness, extend the benefit of the doubt, and generously offer grace to each and every person. We’re called to choose unity over division, compassion over accusation, and hopefulness over hate. Because with God as our leader, United We Stand.
As Catholics, we have a long tradition of engagement in the political process as a means of putting our faith into action. We are called to bring the best of ourselves and our faith to the public square—and yet today, many shy away from such involvement because our national and local conversations are filled with vitriol and harsh language, often directed at people themselves. As Catholics, we must model a better way.
Civilize It is about making room in your heart for those with whom you disagree. We are called to recognize that each one of us is a beloved child of God and to respond in love to that reality. Civilize It is a non-partisan call to focus on the dignity of all people, even when we disagree, and to put faith in action by bearing witness to a better way forward.
